We have all had to deal with a passive listener. As we spoke about our dreams and how our day went, their eyelids drooped. The more we spoke with this inattentive friend, the clearer it became that they were not listening. Any member of a professional coach association such as a life or business coach should avoid communicating in this manner. Strong communication helps you to get your point across and understand where others are coming from.

Rather than engage in passive communication, begin with active listening. When a substantial level of effort is used by the listener to pay attention to the speaker, comprehension is greatly enhanced. As you work towards generating coaching referrals, the best technique is to learn how to listen. Anyone can give a presentation on business or a seminar on how to live your life, but learning to listen accurately is a skill that few speakers have effectively mastered.Listening is not an easy task, nor is it one based on someone’s intelligence. It involves paying your complete attention to what someone is saying and comprehending the totality of their body language, tone of voice and words. Effective, active listening requires the listener to pay attention to what the other is saying. Looking like a good listener by leaning in to listen to the speaker, being responsive and engaging in the conversation when necessary.

By being an active listener, the life coach can gain sympathy from the speaker and show that they understand what the other is saying. Before you can become a goood speaker, you must first learn how to listen. A writer cannot learn to write without first reading many books. Likewise, a professional life or business coach cannot learn to be a good speaker without first learning to listen to those around them.

Your life coach certificate is essential for attracting and maintaining clients.

Look for organizations which have established a solid reputation and can provide testimonials from students who have gone on to create a successful life coaching practice. The ideal organization will have been in business for a lengthy period and also be a member in good standing of a professional coach association.

You should also evaluate the course material to determine the breadth of coverage. Which topics will be covered by the instruction you receive? Does the course material provide adequate information on the various techniques you will need to build a successful practice? These are important questions. A reputable certification program will provide more than just a brief overview of coaching principles and tools.

A final element to consider is whether the certification program includes tools and advice that will help you market your life coaching practice. You should regard this as an essential part of a thorough certification program.

Then you will enjoy reading our following three tips that offer insights and basic approaches for your own journey!

1) Join The Professional Coach Association

This tip is pretty straight forward: sign up and join the professional coach association. Doing so, will put you in touch with like minded individuals that have the same goals and passions you do. It will also give you a chance to network and find potentially new leads for clients.

2) Learn To Generate Your Own Referrals

Another idea for generating coaching referrals and business, is to create a referral technique. One way to do this, is to offer a discount to your current clients that recommend your services to their own friends and family. When someone signs a contract for your professional coaching skills, bonus your referee well so they will tell more people.

3) Learn To Create An Online Presence and Resource Niche

You should also focus on creating a strong online presence in order to generate even more referrals. This can be done by creating a web site or blog. Then, offer simple life and business tips on a regular basis. Be sure to create a strong portfolio and contact resources. That way, when people are browsing online for a life or business coach, they will be more likely to stumble on your sites.

Now you have three simple ideas to help create more clients for your professional coaching business!

Once you have established yourself as a life coach or business coach and started getting your practice off the ground, you might consider becoming a member of a professional coaching association. Members of reputable coaching associations can use their membership credentials to set themselves apart from the competition, and most coaching associations deliver targeted traffic to qualified coaches from their central website. There are a number of coaching associations offering their services to the industry, but the three most influential organizations include the International Association of Coaching, the International Coach Federation and the Worldwide Association of Business Coaches.

The International Association of Coaching (IAC)

The International Association of Coaching is a global coach certifying body with a mission to encourage the development and application coaching standards throughout the coaching industry. In an industry with no formal governing body, the purpose of the IAC is to provide professional coaches with a method of distinguishing themselves with credentials that prove that they have the highest skill set that the industry has to offer.

The International Coach Federation (ICF)

The International Coach Federation is both the oldest and the largest global coaching association in existence today. The ICF also has a set of standards that coaches must meet in order to become members, and certification from the ICF is similar in scope to that of the IAC. This organization also competes and commissions a substantial amount of research regarding the state of the industry and new developments in coaching methodologies throughout the world. Members have access to the ICF research database through their central website.

The Worldwide Association of Business Coaches (WABC)

The Worldwide Association of Business Coaches is the only international coaching association devoted solely to needs and interests of business and executive coaching industry. The WABC was formed in 1997 to assist internal and external business coaches working with clients through businesses, institutions, governments and other organizations. Coaches can choose between an affiliate membership for use the WABC name, resource library and other benefits or a full membership with access to WABC client leads, referrals and support services.

Personality assessments have been proven to be an extremely effective tool in the coaching setting when it comes to discovering your style as a professional coach and the best way to approach different types of clients. Although personality assessments are not used by all business and life coaches, The Advisory Board has placed a heavy emphasis upon these instruments in the Coaching Jump Start program. Here are a few reasons why.

Understand Your Client’s Personality Type

Many coaches rely entirely on time-proven questioning and listening techniques in order to get know their client, but a growing number of professionals are now including personality assessments in their coaching toolkit in order to streamline the process. Popular personality assessments like DISC cut to the core of a client’s motivations and values so that both the coach and the client can understand the basics of what makes a client tick.

Coaches can refer back to a client’s assessment results from time to time throughout the coaching process as a road map for addressing his or her aspirations, challenges and options in order to uncover the best way forward. This is particularly helpful when you are choosing the right kinds of probing questions to best draw a client out when you are breaching a difficult or uncomfortable topic.

Understand Your Own Personality Type

Before you can start helping others reach their goals as a business or life coach, it is crucial that you have an accurate understanding of your own personality and behavior. No matter how well you believe that you know yourself, the truth of the matter is that we all have a few key personality traits that everyone else can see even if we can’t. Personality assessments draw back the curtain so that you can finally see the full picture of how your personal values and motivations effect your actions and communication style.

Cater Your Coaching Style to Specific Personality Types

While personality assessments can serve as an invaluable resource when it comes to getting to know yourself and your clients, many coaches find the results of these tests to be particularly useful when it comes to communicating effectively with different personality types. For example, clients who clearly have a controlling personality will be much more receptive to a direct and efficient communication style, while using a detail oriented approach will be more productive with analytical clients.
